Subject: [ferrethealth] 2 questions: crusty ear and adrennal itch
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

One of my ferrets, Dizzy, got a cut behind one of his ear flaps - it doesn't look infected and is slowly healing, but Dizzy keeps scratching it and it's weeping and crusty teh next day again. I clean off with warm water and dry, but due to scratching, its crusty again.... slowing the healing.

Is there something safe I can clean him with or put on behind Dizzy's ear flap to help it heal more quickly?

Second question! I have a 5 year old ferret with adrenal baldness. Until recently, she hasn't suffered for too much itchiness from her hairloss. When she has shown dry skin in the past, I've slathered on her lotion (Nutri-vet healing cream) and she's fine. Recently, she been throwing herself around scratching and nibbling - the lotion has helped a tiny amount, but she's still itching like mad. She also gets ferretone daily to help get enough fatty acids.

I'm considering trying her on benedryl to see if that helps - i read 1mg per lb as the dose, but not frequency or number of doses.

Does anyone have advice on whether benedryl will even help? If it does, what is the correct doseage? Is there anything better?

Alison (and Dizzy, Lizzy, Suzie and Fifi)
