Subject: [ferrethealth] Excessive bacteria in digestive tract
To: "Ferret Health List" <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I’m having a tough time with my boy Dozer (around 3-1/2 years old) producing too much bacteria in his digestive tract. He’s having anything from loose and seedy stools to occasional diarrhea, all with that smell that’s produced by too much bacteria. I gave him 10 days of amoxicillin, which cleared it up pretty quickly, but now, 3 days after the end of the amoxicillin, it’s back. He’s been getting some forti-flora added to his soup once a day and also getting carafate twice daily to help soothe his stomach and prevent ulcers. I’m also giving him some pepcid as needed, once or twice a day, and he gets some plain pumpkin in his soup as well. I’m also adding some Hill’s A/D to his soup to make it more easily digested. He’s eaten the same soup for years without a prior problem.

Should I try a second round of amoxicillin, or possibly another antibiotic? He’s not good taking meds from syringes, but tolerates the carafate and amoxicillin. If I tried to give him flagyll, the stress would do more harm than good, as he goes nuts. Any idea on what the cause might be? He doesn’t have any kind of blockage or partial blockage, but I do see him occasionally biting/chewing on the carpet, which is very short and does not give off any pieces that can be ingested.
