It wouldn't surprise me if we have had ADV ferrets in Holland without it being recognized, but as said, we are a small county and we have one very prominent ferret vet. When two very young ferret arrived in her practice with the same sort of problem and both came from the same place, alarm bells went of and research began, that is why we can say for 100% that this outbreak came in with the ferret. We traced back all the ferrets that were imported in that group.

The ferrets were not selling because they were too expensive and biting, the shops were sending them back and most were given to a shelter. Most of the ferrets in the shelter had by that time been infected and had a positive reading. nearly all the ferrets were euthanized and the shelter had to close down due to the public reaction. This was not fair to the shelter because they didn't know what they were bringing into the shelter, most of us had never heard of ADV. The ferrets could not be rehomed because we needed to contain the virus.

The few ferrets that were sold at pet stores were traced and most of the ferrets that were with them also tested positive. Some of these people took in ferrets from the shelter and kept them away from other ferrets, the shelter closed down, everything was burned and the shelter owners moved to Germany. We also started research where people could have their ferrets tested for free. We tested about 60 to 70% of the Dutch ferret population, the only ferrets with ADV were the ferrets that had been in close contact with the Path Valley ferrets, so I can guarantee that this outbreak came in with these ferrets.
