Subject: [ferrethealth] probiotics for ferrets?
To: "ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com" <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>
One of my little girls has an intestinal infection again. She hasn't been quite right since she first came down with it in May. We treated for it then and her stool returned to normal. But she never began to play again after that despite being less than a year old (and previously a very WILD ferret) AND she was slow to gain, but she has finally gained a few ounces in the past few weeks. Her current symptoms are she has intermittent blood-tinged stool with a recent episode being clearish pink mucous stool. We thought it went away the first time we treated with Flagyl back in May.. but it has come back and the doctor has prescribed Flagyl again along with Amoxicillin. He said if this doesn't work then we might think about changing her diet (she eats Ultimate 8-in-1 Crunchy).
Anyway, I am worried about her gut health being further compromised by all these antibiotics.. I'm worried they are destroying proper gut flora, which could potentially lead to other health problems like digestive issues and immune system dysfunction. I don't want to stop the antiobiotics as I believe she does have a bacterial infection.. but is there such a thing as probiotics for ferrets so that I can repopulate her with beneficial gut bacteria when she is done with her current course of treatment?
Misty
