Hi Robin,

Remember it's a supplement not a drug, so there's no hard and fast rule for doseage.  When I used to use fortiflora, I would sprinkle the whole packet into the communal bowl of soup (I had 5 ferrets then) once a day.

But to be honest,  I didn't see the best results with Purina fortiflora. It's very palatable--nice liver flavor--but I've used other products that work better.  Wysong has some probiotic products--they've made them for years and then Purina basically ripped off a lot of their research and then tried to sue Wysong for patent infringement!  The only reason I used the Purina product was because as a vet tech I could get it free.

Bene Bac is good, so is Conklin Fast Track, and VetriScience (the company that makes Glycoflex for dogs) also makes a product. These come in a big plastic "syringe" that you turn a dial to squeeze out the right amount per pound.

But I can't say enough about Jarrow Pet Dophilus (available at Whole Foods and other health food stores). Many of these products include clay in their ingredients (kaolin, bentonite, montmorillonite) and there's nothing wrong with that--clay is a great detoxifier because it is adsorbent. (I actually give it to the fuzzies periodically for that reason). But it's also kind of a cheap trick because it will cause the stools to become firm right away by pulling water from the gut. Not because the probiotic has healed the problem.

The Pet-dophilus worked so quickly for GinGin's chemo and antibiotics-related loose stools that I re-read the ingredient list very carefully and it doesn't contain clay, which leads me to conclude that it really did repopulate her gut flora.  I really am a fan, and no, I don't work for the company or get it free!

It comes in a powder and I use a tiny measuring scoop to add about 1/16 to 1/8 TSP  to GinGin's meals,  2-3 times a day.   It doesn't seem to have a flavor at all.  She gets it in her "soup" but you could probably sprinkle it on kibble in a small container and then shake it up well so it is evenly distributed on the food.

Skyla
