Subject: [ferrethealth] Quarantining New Ferrets
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

(I looked in the archives, but didn't find anything very new or definitive on this topic.)

I work with a shelter and was asked to write policies & procedures for sheltering adoptable ferrets in homes. I included the following:
"Ferrets new to the home will be kept isolated from all other ferrets for at least two weeks. They must be in a different room with absolutely no contact, including sniffing under doors or through baby gates, etc. Personnel should wear a smock or similar, that stays in that area, when handling the new ferrets."

My thinking is that this would at least help prevent contagious respiratory problems that often arise as well as discourage spread of ECE & other problems. I am meeting a great deal of resistance. What do you all think? Am I being too pushy? Will such a procedure help keep our other kids healthier?

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
