Personally, I think quarantining new ferrets is a good thing. True, doing this may not prevent everything from getting out unless, like Alicia said, you invest in a separate air ventilation system. Still, I think quarantining can prevent several contagious illnesses. I have a little boy that I rescued from a mom & pop exotic pet store.  He was living on wire floors and was underweight. He also had a prolapsed rectum and his poo smelled to high heaven! Turns out he had coccidia, which is contagious. Keeping him in quarantine for 14 days kept me from having to treat the rest of the business.

Also, I think quarantining new ferrets is helpful for them psychologically. Everything is new -- smells, sights, sounds. It gives them (and everyone else) a chance to gradually adjust to the new surroundings.

I think it is a small inconvenience with large benefits.
