Subject: [ferrethealth] Recurrence of Excess Bacteria and Diarrhea
To: "Ferret Health List" <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I'm taking Dozer in on Thursday for bloodwork and a bacterial culture of his stools, but in the meantime I'm trying to get some ideas as to what can cause his constant recurrence of excess bacteria and diarrhea.

He initially got 2 weeks of amoxicillin, which cleared it up the first time, but within 3 days later it was back. So the vet then gave him Chloramphenacol, and he was on that for 3 weeks. Again, it cleared up completely, his poops were normal, and his appetite and energy level were great. His last dose was Saturday. Now, 3 days later, it's coming back quickly. Less appetite, less energy, and very smelly diarrhea that is tan in color and both seedy and gloppy.

He has been getting some Forti-Flora in his soup daily during this whole time.

During this time, 3 of my other ferrets have been completely unaffected. My oldest girl, Baby Girl, got it when Dozer was having his second round, and she also got the Chloramphenacol, but since she stopped getting that on Saturday, after two weeks, she’s been fine. No recurrence.

The vet wants to check bloodwork and stool culture (which takes 5-7 days) to see if she can get an idea as to what the cause might be. Any ideas? He eats the same food as everyone else... mostly soup, which is made up of mostly ground kibble, a little Uncle Jim's, a little salmon oil, Gerber's turkey baby food, plain pumpkin, and some ferretone. Kibble is TF and TF Turkey-Lamb-Venison, which he also eats sometimes between soup meals.

I am using some pepcid and carafate to try to help the symptoms and help him feel better, but neither is correcting the diarrhea at all.
