Subject: [ferrethealth] Medical management of prostate issue
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My 6.5 year old ferret, Badger, just started straining to urinate last night (he has not yet been blocked). His urinalysis was clear and xrays/ultrasound show a mass which we currently believe is a prostatic cyst. He shows signs of adrenal disease also. Unfortunately, the most ferret experienced vet in our area is out of town and we would like to wait for him to return before proceeding with further surgical treatment (if possible).

In the meantime are there medications typically used to treat the condition medically? My vet prescribed prazosin but I like to read about others' experience with any medication for ferrets before I try it on mine and I don't see here that others have used it. The only other medication I've seen mentioned is Propecia?

Thank you,
Christine

[I would still consider a Lupron Depot injection 200mcg minimum. I had a very similar experience in a 7 year-old, no signs whatsoever of adrenal disease except for straining. The Lupron worked and he subsequently received a Deslorelin implant. The Lupron won't hurt him and may be a life saver.- Moderator (TD)]
