Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: back leg paralysis
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

This happened with our Lily in 2007/2008, when she was 3 years old. Did
your ferret's come on suddenly? Lily at first started walking in a wobbly
way, rather suddenly, and then over a period of about a week, it turned in to
the hind leg weakness and inability that you describe. I used an
experienced ferret vet, and he worked with medication treatment. In our case, it was
always unclear whether this was due to an injury or something else. The
symptoms she had sound just like what you are describing. Bottom line for
us, is that she continued to have good quality of life for about a year,
despite the back leg issue. Her upper body became very strong and she moved
herself around well enough that I didn't get her an assist device. I
massaged her back legs regularly with gentle massage, she continued to play
surprisingly well with her two sisters, she became very cuddly and she seemed
surprisingly happy/content, despite my concern and continued vet visits and
trying other meds and diagnostics to see what we could do. For a long time,
things didn't improve or get worse. About a year later, she showed other
symptoms that ultimately took her life (not by mercy shot; she died in the
animal hospital), and again it was unclear if they were related or not. I
hope your little one does well. Lisa
