To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I would suggest considering Demodecosis, caused by a microscopic skin mite common in ferrets, humans and other animals. I had a ferret on longterm prednisolone for insulinoma who developed skin symptoms like you describe. Normally not a problem, demodex mites proliferate in an immunosuppressed individual.
It is challenging to test for, so we treated based on clinical symptoms. He was treated with Advantage Multi (kitten/puppy dose) and within days the scorched looking skin improved. Within a week the bumps started healing. It may have to be repeated after 3 - 4 weeks, but in his case, one dose worked!
In terms of diazoxide, I had another ferret who was immunocompromised and when he developed insulinoma my vet opted to treat with diazoxide exclusively. He tolerated it well and was on it for 2 years. Then developed other serious unrelated health issues (i.e.,adrenal carcinoma).
