Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: New swelling, possible anal sac impaction?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Are your ferrets with adrenal disease receiving treatment for their condition i.e., Deslorelin implants or Lupron Depot?

The swelling does not appear like an anal gland impaction, having experienced several in my ferrets who are not descented.

Anal glands are located closer to the anus. It could be a drainage tract that has developed as a result of an anal gland infection but I suspect its more likely trauma from being mounted by your male, or complications from adrenal disease, especially if she is not receiving treatment for it. It does appear as though there may be a haematoma in the swelling, again consistent with trauma.

If they haven't received treatment for adrenal disease, I am strongly urging you to get them treated. If they have, then they need to be re-evaluated by your vet and may need to have their doses adjusted.

In the interim keep the male separated from the female to allow the area to heal if it is trauma. And if it is something else, being mounted would only make it worse.
