To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
While there is a rare reaction in some ferrets to Deslorelin AND Lupron Depot, that is, pancreatitis, it is extremely rare.
Deslorelin and Lupron cause an initial spike of hormone levels and if there are going to be any adverse effects, they would have occurred within a few days, not months later.
Without a pathology report/necropsy I would be hesitant to conclude their deaths were in any way related to the Deslorelin implants. It sounds like they already had advanced disease, and may have had other health issues. If female, with advanced untreated adrenal disease, they may have had aplastic anemia, which would account for the petechiae.
I suspect their disease was so advanced that it was already too late for any treatments to help in any significant way. All of this of course is speculation, and unless the shelter had necropsies/pathologies done, I would be cautious about accepting their explanation. Otherwise it falls under the category of 'heresay' or raw speculation.
Sometimes people grab at explanations to help them to deal with such tragic losses. The consequences of this may inadvertently impact on others, as it did for you.
The truth that we can all agree on, is that at some point in advanced disease, nothing can turn it around.
