You say that one vet has ruled out lymphoma, but how did he/she come to this conclusion? The only way to accurately diagnose it's presence or absence is with a biopsy. Otherwise, it could very well lay hidden, and it might be the cause of his enlarged spleen, as well as the difficulty in walking. The enlarged spleen would be a concern for me... a big one. It is prone to rupturing when it gets too big, and that would kill him.
You said x-rays were done, but was an ultrasound done to search for tumors or other abnormalities?
Is there a possibility that while you were away, he experienced some kind of trauma to the spine? A fall, or being picked up improperly?
I would see if there is something that can be done to try to reduce the enlarged spleen. Something is causing it to be so enlarged, and so far that something hasn't been found. Sometimes these things are not found until near the end.
