Christina,

One of the key things to understand is that ferrets are very different from
cats medically, so while some knowledge transfers, other treatments/rules of
thumb etc., are very different, and using appropriate treatment for one
species can be harmful for the other.

On the distemper front, the only two diseases which ferrets are subject to,
and for which vaccines exist are canine distemper and rabies. As I
understand it, there is a significant difference between feline distemper
and canine distemper.

Currently, there is one approved distemper vaccine (Purevax by Merial) and
one approved Rabies vaccine (Imrab-3, also from Merial). Many people have
used Galaxy-D from Schering-Plough, however they have discontinued
manufacture of that vaccine, and have no plans that I'm aware of to re-start
production. There may be some supplies remaining on shelves, but from what
I hear it's getting pretty rare.

Merial will only sell to licensed vets, so it is much more difficult for
breeders/shelters to obtain.

While ferrets can get worms, it is not a very common occurrence, and I've
not heard a ferret vet recommend worming as any normal routine.

As always, the best advice is to find and get to know a good exotic vet who
regularly sees ferrets as part of their practice. Then you'll have better
and more specific advice than we can give remotely.
