Aspirates are often non-diagnostic. I would recommend an excisional biopsy of one of the peripheral lymph nodes. The lymph node should be sent to a histopathologist who has a great deal of experience examining tissue samples from ferrets (e.g. Dr. Michael Garner at Northwest ZooPath). Removing a peripheral lymph node is going to be a much less invasive procedure than an exploratory surgery and it should give you valuable diagnostic information. If lymphoma present, then the treatment is not going to be surgical, it will be medical (chemotherapy).
