My Pace had a large osteoma on the top/side of his head. We originally
thought about trying to remove it, but unfortunately it extended into his
skull cavity and the upper jaw area in addition to what was visible. Since
it could not be removed completely without losing him and osteomas are a
benign bone growth, we could only watch as it continued to grow. Luckily
the growth seemed to expand on the upper corner of his head and did not seem
to cause any problem with his brain and his ability to eat during the time
he was with me. He was also bald from adrenal issues when he came to me,
and we scheduled him for surgery. It was a right adrenal tumor that was
extremely huge. I was called during surgery with the sobering news that it
was going to be extremely difficult to remove and asked if I wanted to take
the safe option of just closing him up. I asked him to try to remove it.
When the vet was finished, he called me back and told me that it had
actually peeled away from the vena cava and while some cells might be left
behind he felt he had gotten the tumor apparently intact. The biopsy came
back malignant, and we did sonograms every 6 months until he started to
loose his hair again. We opted for the second surgery and his left adrenal
was removed and proved to be benign. Since there was no sign of any growths
in the area where the right adrenal was removed, we stopped the sonograms.
At times the osteoma on his head grew, other times it stayed the same, but
it never caused a problem in the 3 ½ years he was with me. He eventually
died from malignant tumors all throughout his body that appeared very
suddenly and were apparently connected to the malignant right adrenal tumor
we had removed shortly after he came to me. There were pictures of the
osteoma posted in the library here shortly after I got him when we were
trying to determine what it was and what to do about it. The timing was
sometime during the year before the postings about Fatty.
