Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Is it worth adding diazoxide to a really sick ferret? Skin phot
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

One of the well-known side-effects of Prednisone is that it depresses the
immune response. It is possible, I would think, that this has allowed a
skin infection to take hold where it otherwise might not.

This is one of the advantages of diazoxide: It does not have this effect on
the immune response. By adding diazoxide and tapering down the pred, you
would still maintain treatment levels for the insulinoma while allowing the
immune system to function better.

The flip side is that I've heard that not all ferrets respond to diazoxide,
and it is much more expensive than Pred.

>My ferret has been suffering with insulinoma for about 2 yrs now. She has
been on Prednisone, up to 2.5 mg twice a day until just recently I cut that
dose in half because she started getting crusty skin all over. Now she has
large bald spots and the skin is red and there are bumps underneath the
skin.
