Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Sick Ferrets with curve in tail
To: "ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com" <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Okay, this is very interesting.. Here I am trying to figure out why one of my little girls has reccuring bloody stool.  The vet has prescribed two rounds of antibiotics over the past 3 months (both Flagyl & Amoxicillin), but it is now back this week. She is our only ferret who keeps getting sick AND the only ferret who holds her tail crooked.  When standing behind her, the tail goes to the right.

So what could this crooked tail indicate in a young ferret (about 9 months old) who has recurring bloody stool?  It does seem to go away with antibiotics, but then comes back a couple of weeks after stopping antibiotics.  She has also lost her wild side as she used to be extremely playful, but not so much anymore.  I'm at a loss for what to do for this poor baby!  The vet said our next step will be diet change, but I'm not convinced that is her problem since her stool returns to normal after a course of antibiotics.. Then it seems to come back after stopping the antibiotics.  Seems like a super bug to me.  What else could it be?

[I had a ferret who had a similar problem. On consultation with an expert ferret vet, it was suggested that we treat her for proliferative colitis, which is caused by the bacterium Lawsonia intracellularis. This is generally confirmed with a colon biopsy, however, we opted to treat based on clinical symptoms and lack of responsiveness to conventional antibiotics. It worked! She had no recurrence after treatment ended.
Treatment was with oral chloramphenicol - 50 mg/kg of body weight, q 12 h for 10 to 21 days, (Krueger, Murphy & Fox,1989). You may wish to explore this possibility with your vet. - Moderator (TD)].
