As have been pointed out by many people, there are a wide variety of possible causes behind a cough. If at all persistent, a thorough vet check is definitely the right course of action, as some of the potential causes are quite serious.

However, you should also keep in mind that the ˜occasional' cough that may last a day or two could also be the result of something as benign as some hair in the throat, or too much dust up the nose from getting into something dirty and playing around in it. One of my boys, Boomer, an extremely energetic and healthy male of around 2 years of age, will get a cough for a day or two every month or so. I've learned from careful observation that a little ferretlax and a little extra pumpkin in his soup will help it to go away.

As I said, I[m not at all downplaying the importance of a vet exam when coughing is involved, but one should also consider that it could be something as simple as a recurrence of hair or dust in the throat.
