Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Food Allergy Diarrhea questions
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

My boy Shane has on again/off again diarrhea issues. He's been thru a
number of fecals, cultures, and tests... and his vet believe we are dealing with some sort of food allergy. I've tried numerous foods, and I *think* I'm coming to this conclusion: that he is allergic to poultry.

Often when an animal has an allergy to a commercial food, it is not the meat product that they are allergic to, but the grain that it found in many commercial foods. Grains have a history in both humans and animals of being a major cause of food allergies. Have you tried any of the grain free kibbles and other foods?

There are several excellent grain free kibbles available on the market. If you have not tried a grain free kibble, I would suggest doing so before deciding it is a chicken allergy. I found this to be the case with several of my ferrets.

That said, if it is an allergy to chicken, then I feel for you. Finding a food that contains the nutrients that a ferret needs that does not contain any chicken is hard, unless you go to a raw commercial or whole prey diet.

There are several commercially prepared raw diets that contain no chicken or grains, and will supply the nutritional needs of a ferret.
