Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Food Allergy Diarrhea questions
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My first ferret had what my vet believed to be inflamatory bowel syndrome (went as far as intestinal biopsies to rule out other causes). We tried a duck diet with him which worked for a while but after ~3 months he developed struvite crystals in his urine and my vet found a few other reports of this happening in ferrets on duck diets. We switched him to Hills prescription diet feline z/d which uses a hydrolized protein that is supposed to be less recognizable to the body and therefore less likely cause allergies and this worked well. When this product was on backorder we tried Hills prescription diet feline d/d rabbit and pea and this worked equally as well. The down side to these diets is the higher grain content since they are made for cats and not ferrets.

Hope this helps,
