Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: HELP! Furosemide for early cardiomyopthy? Aspiration ? HEART WORM
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I got my boy in for the echocardiogram. The news is worse than fatal - it looks like multiple heart worms in the right atrium of the heart. He does have some signs of mild cardiotmyopathy. Blood was drawn for an antigen test to confirm this diagnosis. I will find out results in a couple of days and post the findings. If my ferret test positive for heart worm, my other ferrets will be screened with Echo. and blood tests.

Denver area is not considered to be a risk area for heart worm. The risk of heart worm in this area is so small that ferret vets recommend against preventive medicine for ferrets unless you take them outside a lot.

my ferrets were RARELY outside. When they were outside, they were either in the sun at non-mosquito for VERY LIMITED periods of time since they do not like being outdoors. Over many years, we have had very few mosquitoes in our house since I am PARANOID bout heart worm.

I worry about West Nile since my husband is disabled with chronic lyme diseases.

Needless to say, I am devastated and can only ray that my other babies are OK.
