Subject: [ferrethealth] clarification on bath water temperature
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
My comments regarding water temperature for ferrets has created some confusion, let me clarify what I meant. Ferrets normal body temperatures are in the range of 100 - 104 F (37.8 - 40.0 C). Bath water in this range would be comfortable for a ferret. Without actually testing the water with a thermometer it is hard to know for certain what the temperature is.
When someone recommends a 'warm' bath for a ferret, then questions arise "What is meant by "warm?" "What is too warm?" "What is not warm enough?"
Humans naturally prefer bath water temperatures several degrees warmer than body temperature. Consider few humans will take a tepid bath and feel comfortable. Most of us take hot baths. There are variations in terms of comfort levels of course. In other words what would be comfortably warm to us may be uncomfortably warm for a ferret. The caution is to use common sense.
Yes, most of us do, but it is always surprizing how many do not.
