Subject: [ferrethealth] Recurrant foul and watery poop
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I'm having an ongoing problem with a ferret I adopted a few months ago. He has ongoing diarrhea that is watery, mucousy, green/yellow, and extremely foul smelling. After several visits to the vet and different courses of action, we can't seem to get it to stop, so I'm looking for some advice.
Background:
He is probably around 3 years old, not really sure because he is from a shelter. He shows no signs of any other health problems other than this horrible poop. He's very active, playful, and has gained about a pound since we got him (he was underweight). I have no idea of his history prior to his time with us.
He did have coccidia when we first got him, which he also passed on to my other ferret. Both ferrets were treated and cleared. My other ferret is having not any poop issues.
So far we've tried:
Amoxicillin, metronidazole, and some other drug (can't recall the name), with pepto for a month.
Amoxy for 2 weeks.
Amoxy with prednisone and activia for a month.
This time we're going with amoxy and probiotics for six weeks.
During each treatment, it clears up a good bit (never completely), and the smell stops. Within one-two weeks after stopping treatment the watery, discolored, and foul smelling poo starts up again.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them. Thanks.
