Dear Amanda,

I saw a similar case just 2 weeks ago in the clinic where I take my ferrets, but the owner brought the ferret to late to be able to help her. She had otitis (not with so much external drainage like in your case) and nervous symptoms, such as hind end weakness. The ferret was very dehydrated and started to have seizures in less than half an hour from the moment she was brought in.
Upon autopsy, the doctor discovered that the cerebellum had no more structure, it was practically 'watery'.

I asked my doctor what could have be done in this case and he told me the following: most important is to keep the ferret hydrated! If the infection has spread to the brain, some antibiotics need to be used, such as: doxycycline, cephalosporin generation 3 / 4 or clindamycin.

Unfortunately I don't have more information about this and I don't know if any of these antibiotics are safe for ferrets, but I guess your doctor should know. But obviously, it's a very dangerous affection and your doctor should take it seriously. I think with proper medication and a bit of luck, your ferret will do it.

Warmest regards,

Roxana
