Hi there,

I had a ferret and a mink with this type of problem, and the culprit was a tooth. In the mink case, an abscess appeared in the lower part of the jaw, basically over night. The doctor opened the abscess, drained the infection, cleaned the area then removed the tooth. The infection affected the jaw bone so he had to do a little reconstructive surgery. My mink recovered very fast, in a matter of days.

In the ferret case, we tried with antibiotics, the swelling seemed to disappear, but it came back pretty fast. His upper side (mouth and nose area) was very swollen. The vet took the tooth out and drained the infection through the root canal. After that, the ferret was on a course of antibiotics and he recovered very well.

Both teeth were damaged, dark in colour and with almost transparent texture.

As Jeff said, you should not wait and go to a vet right away. The head area is very dangerous, as the infection can spread and become potentially fatal in a short amount of time. An Xray can reveal if it's a tooth infection or tumour.

Hope your fuzzy gets well soon }{

Roxana
