Subject: [ferrethealth] Safe topical antibiotic
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have a 6 year old female ferret who has many lymphoma lumps inside her
body and now has a nasty giant mast cell or whatever it is growing just
behind her ear. (The cauliflower on a stalk tumor) Due to the internal
tumors including a large one under her throat her time is limited and I
will not do surgery on the external one. As the oozing crust developing
now has a nasty odor I would like to put something on it. I did bathe
her to get the crust off and help it smell better How about using some
Betadine on it? Should it be used full strength or thin it out. If so
what ratio?

Thanks for any advice,

[If it smells then there is the likelihood of an infection and she may require oral as well as topical antibiotics. I would ask your vet about Betadine, I would imagine it is too harsh and may not be effective for an active infection. Something like Silver sulphadiazine i.e., Flamazine might be a better alternative. I would also wash the area with a dilute Hibatane solution. Again check with your vet for the best topical antibiotic and/or antibiotic. - Moderator (TD)].
