I, too, live in an area that is infested with fleas due to the sandy soil ...


I choose not to use chemicals on my ferrets, instead I use a lice comb ... the teeth of the lice comb are close enough that it picks up the fleas as I groom them.


I usually fill the sink with water and add a little dish washing soap ... the soap makes the fleas sink when they are combed out of the fur ... I then scruff the ferrets over the sink and just run the lice comb through their coats several times.  I'd rather do this then expose them to potentially damaging effects of chemicals ...


... and, of course, get yourself a good vacuum cleaner and clean your carpets often ... also will need to wash their bedding more than what you are used to ...
I usually add a little Borax and some white vinegar into my wash to ensure this kills the eggs ... good luck.
