Subject: Expressing Scent Glands Re: [ferrethealth] Digest Number 1678
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I was looking for information on expressing the bladder and found this instead.
I had four of the DMK ferrets - 3 males and 1 female. Skitch, the sable male, did get an impaction that I was able to express after a soak. It did not recur.
Isadora, a champagne female, had one impact this spring. Soaks didn't work. My vet was able to express it and I am sure it was painful. She later developed an abcess on the other side, and it healed nicely with the soaks and antibiotics. She initially was quite the poofer, and had not been poofing since losing her buddy, Duncan. I often wondered if that contributed to the problem.
Same genetics. Makes one wonder.

The 3 I was referring to came from the Ohio rescue and were not spayed either. 2 out of 3 have had infections and recurring impactions. All 3 have required manual expressing by my vet every six months or so. One came with a nasty anal gland infection that recurred three times each on a course of antibiotics before it finally cleared up.
