Amanda,
Ask about ear polyps when you get to the vet. My cat had one and had all the
same symptoms. I took my cat to the emergency when he lost his balance and
was panting. While there pus started coming out of his ear, they put him on
oxygen and took x-rays that showed nothing and cleaned out his ear. They
thought his brain might have been infected. I had to leave him there for the
rest of the night, so I went home and researched the problem. In the morning
I picked him up and took him to my regular vet, to my dismay he was not
there and a relief vet was. She read through all the notes from the
emergency clinic and tried to get me to put him down. I asked her about ear
polyps that I had found in my Merck veterinary manual. She said no it wasn't
that and if I didnt put him down he would die or be severely brain damaged.
I decided to take him home and she said he needed more oxygen an fluids, so
I let her do that and came back to take him home. She fought with me and
insisted I take him back to the ER for the night. I took him home and did
acupressure for ear infections on him and in 3 hours he was doing better.
The next morning I took him back when my regular vet was there. The vet
techs couldn't believe how good he was doing. My vet was upset that the
relief vet didn't give me any antibiotics to take home for him, she did give
him a shot. He said it could be an ear polyp but his ear was to swollen to
see if one was in there. I treated him with clavamox and batril drops in the
ear from my vet and acupressure. Two weeks later I took him back and he did
have an ear polyp and my vet removed it. He is now doing great, no brain
damage.
The panting was not from fever but from the nasal passage being blocked from
the swelling of the ear polyp. He had to breath from his mouth in order to
get any air.
I hope this helps.
