Subject: [ferrethealth] Need 2nd opinion on expired Deslorelin Implant
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My 5 yr.old Cocoa has gotten 2 Deslorelin Implants in the last 18 months. She was only starting to show just a little bit of thinning hair when I got her the first one. Anyways it almost 9 months later and time for another one. The vet says it is ok for her to get an implant that expired in Aug of this year. He said it will be just as effective. I want to make absolute sure that it is potent enough. I also have 5 others that are going in for implants for preventative in February. Should I have the vet save the Aug implant for the preventative in one of them in February and have him order fresh for Cocoa since she IS adrenal? I do not know anything about how the implants are stored.... Do they start 'working' when they are inserted? Or do they actually expire so long after the date of manufacure? Does anyone know how to determine how long they will last? Thanks for any and all advice.

[Worse case scenario you can have another one implanted when clinical symptoms start appearing again. I have used an expired one on one occasion because they were back-ordered and it appeared to work as well. I did get a discount on it because it was expired so if that hasn't been offered to you, consider asking for one. You can always contact Peptech directly and ask them the same questions you have posted here. Publicly listed contact info is: suprelorin@peptech.com - Moderator (TD)].
