The Tufts protocol calls for the pred as the last drug, if I remember correctly. Jorge Mayer, who created it, told me that if you start with pred you have nowhere to go.
I added Diazoxide to Duncan's regimen last year and it was helpful. I also learned at the time the Pediapred (brand name), which I had been using, has a lot of sugar. When I changed to the compounded prednisolone, the sugar was gone. I think it had been keeping his BG elevated and him out of seizures. In retrospect, I was able to document that he started having more problems after the switch. In all the years I have used Pediapred, nobody has told me about it containing sugar. I have asked many pharmacists the differences and nobody mentioned it.
Having lost Duncan earlier than expected, and something I attribute to my ignorance, I want to encourage you to work directly with the vet and pharmacist and and to consider the ferret and the protocol. If you use a particular protocol, do it as instructed and be sure the dosage is given accurately and promptly. Yes, they can be that fragile and still have a good quality of life if you are diligent.
I got mine at Roadrunner Pharmacy in Phoenix. It is a compounding vet pharmacy.
