Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] slow release melatonin
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Always remember that oral melatonin is the least effective approach and that a melatonin implant is the second least effective BUT that either can be given with either Lupron DEPOT, OR given with much longer lasting deslorelin IMPLANT called Suprelorin. When that is done, since the two classes of meds work in different ways, the effect can be marvelously cumulative so the combo can be huge win. In those individuals for whom surgery is not the best option for the given ferret we personally prefer the approach of using the Ferretonin melatonin implant along with the Suprelorin deslorelin implant.

Should all go well then sometime next year Suprelorin will not have to be imported to the U.S. (which will save a lot in transport fees) but instead will be available here. Until then here is how to import it, and the study list IS important to go along with the treating vet's order letter for attachment to the parcel so the entire post should go to the importing vets who need to know that importation of this med has NOT been at all difficult for some time now:

http://ferrethealth.org/archive/FHL12551

which I will repeat below since it has been close to a year and people new to the FHL may not realize that the separate FHL Archives exist and are easily searched. It is just one of the resources made available by the wonderful Pam and Eric Sessoms, just as the compounding pharmacies list and the vets' list found through the Files section of the FHL are managed by them.

(The below list was shared with Peptech back when we imported, so they might provide it but if not it follows in this second part of the post below, and know that in the U.S. it can be more successful to list the studies which happened here first in such lists. -- SC)

(Later in that they had us double up on the implants with new ones every 3 months.)
