I have to disagree a little. I live in a very rural area in Britain, when I
first had ferrets, there were no experienced ferret vets around. Since many
people are in a similar position, what I find most important is that you
have a small animal vet who is a good surgeon. And a vet who is willing to
cooperate and learn. I have the most brilliant vet, she is an excellent
surgeon and works with me any way possible. I can print out information from
the Internet and she is interested in learning more about ferrets, for
example recently the fact that Suprelorin is being tried/ used as a
preventative. She bought a ferret vet book when she first came to the
veterinary practice. And she allows me to observe surgeries and post mortems
and allows me to take pictures, which is something other vets won't feel
happy about.
So yes, I agree that the jill needs to be taken out of season and ideally
spayed (even though some British vets now prefer Suprelorin to neutering)
but if there is a local small animal vet who is a good surgeon then I
personally see no need for a 3 hour trip to a ferret expert. A spay to me is
a relatively small, quick and routine operation.

[The caution would be if the veterinarian lacks confidence in performing the procedure. It is a routine and quick procedure for an experienced ferret veterinarian, it is neither routine, nor simple for an inexperienced veterinarian. In my region most vets will under no circumstances see a ferret even if it is an emergency situation! There are more risks of complications when spaying an adult female jill, especially one who may be in estrus. - Moderator (TD)].
