Subject: [ferrethealth] Sudden Death of 4 y.o. ferret
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Rylee was a happy, healthy 4-year-old male ferret. He had recently been seen by a ferret knowledgible vet for his annual check-up and the vet said he was fine. He did receive a Lupron shot for adrenal disease. Adrenal surgery occured more than a year ago with no complications. Lupron was being used to treat recurring Adrenal symptoms.

Sunday morning he was found in his bed, paralyzed from the neck down. He was still breathing and alert. He would move his head but could not hold it up. The rest of his body was limp. He was fine the night before: eating, drinking, using the litter pan all normally. He had not been out of his cage to play for several days which rules out injury unless he fell in the cage during the night. It is a multi-level cage and the shelves are situated such that even if he did fall, he wouldn't have fallen far.

I have no logical explanation for Rylee's condition. He was euthanized within two hours of being found but the emergency vet (since this was Sunday) refused to do a necropsy stating she felt it was a stroke and the office was not in the practice of doing necropsies when cause of death was so obvious. The emergency vet was NOT the normal treating vet.

I would appreciate any thoughts on what may have happened to Rylee just for my own peace of mind. Surely the adrenal disease didn't cause this, right? Could he have suffered a stroke as the vet said? Or was there something we missed with Rylee?

Thank you for any help,

Heather
