In my experience, any veterinarian who is comfortable doing a pediatric spay on a kitten (about four to five months old, which is a common age to spay them) ought to be perfectly able to spay a ferret as far as surgical skills go. The concern is knowing proper anesthesia techniques for ferrets rather than the technical skill for doing the surgery itself.
What is needed, more than having had lots of ferret experience, is an attitude of willingness to learn the differences between treating other animals and treating ferrets. Most of the vets treating ferrets these days started out with no experience in them - those of us who were lucky had a few classes in vet school and/or a mentor with experience. That is improving, but isn't all that different yet. If a vet has no ferret experience, but is willing to learn - that's a good starting point.
This jill can be treated successfully by any small animal vet who is willing to learn and take advice from those of us who have had experience. I am perfectly willing to consult with her owner's vet - as a breeder myself as well as a ferret vet, I have lots of experience dealing with jills in season.
It is imperative that her heat cycle be ended, certainly!
Dr. Ruth
