Subject: [ferrethealth] Experiences With Azathioprine (Imuran)
To: "Ferret Health List" <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

If anyone has used Azathioprine (Imuran) before with a ferret, can you give me some info on your experience with it? Specifically, did it help? How long did it take before you began to see it helping? Did the ferret then have to stay on it for the rest of its life? I'm using it for the first time now with Dozer and I'm trying to get some ideas. So far it has not helped after his fourth daily dose. I realize that all ferrets are different, but any information is appreciated.

[I used it for a ferret with Eosinophilic Granulomatous (EGE)a disease similar to IBD but far worse and attacks the liver and lungs as well. She was gradually weaned off prednisolone and switched to Imuran over a period of a month under expert veterinary guidance. Once on the Imuran it took about a week before I saw any results. She had to have blood work once a month for the first 6 months to closely monitor her and make certain the Imuran was not causing adverse effects, which it did not. She was on it for 2 years and did very well until she developed an AV heart block, which she subsequently did not survive while on a waiting list for a pacemaker. - Moderator (TD)].
