Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Expressing a ferret (can we talk pee?)
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Okay. No takers, I see. Specifically, I would like to learn more about actual situations:
1. I don't express him. How long before his bladder would no longer stretch? Since he wasn't espressed for 7 months, is it necessary?
2. How much pee (physical quantity) should I expect to see in each "sitting?" And, how much does he need to pee daily?

We did go to the vet today for a distemper vaccine and learned that he has gained almost a pound. He is a porker now and I express him from the front like milking a cow. Anything I should know?

Also, I figured out that when he is first picked up, if I try to express him it is almost impossible, but if I turn on the warm water, and then start stimulating him, I can also squeeze and get more urine out. Why am I unable to get started before he is ready to pee?

Thank you for input.

Renee

[I have only had to express one ferret who had ascending paralysis when he arrived and had extensive urine burns to his abdomen and hind end. My vet thought it might be a spinal injury and was hopeful that in time he would improve with good care so asked me to take him. This was more care than the owner was prepared for. Unfortunately, the paralysis progressed and subsequent necropsy identified spinal and brain lymphosarcoma. In the interim I was expressing him every 4 hours as directed by my vet, and cleaning him thoroughly because of the extensive urine burns.

I did have another ferret who blocked and the emergency clinic advised me that he had to be expressed every 4 hours as well. Fortunately, in his case a Lupron Depot injection resolved the issue, which was the result of early onset adrenal disease - he wasn't even 2 years old. He had adrenal surgery and received 2 rounds of Deslorelin implants in following years before he passed away this past spring.

So in these two cases the advice was expressing every 4 hours, however, I don't know if that was because of the particular circumstances or whether this is the recommended schedule in all cases. - Moderator (TD)].
