I use C.E.T toothpaste;
http://www.1800petmeds.com/C.E.T.+Enzymatic+Toothpaste-prod10593.html

It's a pet toothpaste that contains enzymes that break down the placque. It
works much better than other toothpastes in my experience.

It is usually sold by vets, but doesn't require a prescription, so you can
get it at places like 1800-Petmeds.

To apply, I've always used Q-Tips. They're just the right size, easy on the
ferret, and keep your fingers out of annoyed ferrets' mouths!

Also, being disposable, you don't need to worry about things growing on them
in between uses.

In between brushings, or if someone has inflamed gums, I use Listerine
Smart-Rinse children's mouth-wash, again on a Q-tip.

It helps keep the bacteria down in the mouth, and the ferrets don't mind too
much.
