For the ones who do not easily yawn when scruffed try a supported scruff done in a way to minimize pinching (Experiment with different hand holds.) and then either do yawn motions yourself, or gently stroke the underside of the throat with one finger, or both. Then slip in a pen before the mouth closes.

Even if your veterinarian is not open vets tend to have an emergency number that can be called and then they can phone back, or they can recommend who provides emergency coverage. In our area emergency coverage is a bit tricky. There are two places which take emergencies that really don't know ferrets well. Despite that most of the vets in those places do try and we have had three ferrets saved for that reason and none lost to them. Each of those two has some vets who refuse to see ferrets, though.
