Hi Linda, Yes, I can relate to what you/your friend is going thru with Chewie. I have a boy Shane, who I can't get to regulate either. He's had bloodwork, x-rays, ultrasounds, fecals, cultures...etc... vet can't find anything. We thought he had IBD, or an allergy to something, but his poops vary so much, so I can't imagine its an allergy or it would be consistently bad.
The current thing I am trying right now, is acidophilus for small animals from Pet Authority. It took a couple of days to work, but his poops looked really good for about a good long week. Then one day I noticed they were a little looser, so I gave him a little extra of the acidophilus... I guess bad mistake, because for the past few days they have been really loose and seedy.
I know this probably doesn't help you much, but I'm thinking that it had to have worked for Shane at first (then I messed it up somehow?). But if you've tried everything with Chewie, maybe this stuff could help him... just don't give him too much!
