Our local vets do not supply melatonin implants so they are not available to everyone. In terms of the oral liquid melatonin, the kind available in this region is the fruit flavoured kind and it is quite effective if given correctly and regularly. Although I agree that adding a Deslorelin implant or Lupron Depot would make for a better all around treatment regimen to medically manage the disease.

I have found that sometimes owners misinterpret what the vet tells them or may leave out information the vet gave them. I don't think this is always intentional as much as they may not realize it is critical to getting the bigger picture. I oftentimes get one story from the owner but when I check directly with the vet, things are not quite the way the owner described.

While I agree that getting a second opinion from a ferret knowledgeable vet is the best plan, I would not criticize the treating vet until I knew exactly what she had advised the owner.

Stewie's owner seems to genuinely care for him and is doing what she can for him within her means. The oral liquid melatonin is quite reasonably priced at around $20.00 and lasts at least 3 mths. Key of course is that it has to be given regularly at the correct times.
