Hi, Holly, and everyone else,

I about choked when I read this. Successful right adrenal surgeries
have been done for a very long time now, as in somewhere between 15-20
years. Three of my ferrets have had successful right adrenal
surgeries over the years. One, Podo, was around seven and a half
years old at the time and he came through the surgery just fine.

Right adrenal surgery is very difficult and dangerous because the
gland is adajcent/attached to the vena cava, the main vein to the
heart. It takes an experienced veterinary surgeon who knows ferrets
well to do the surgery with a good chance of success. If your vet was
simply telling you that he or she is uncomfortable doing the surgery
then I think you should appreciate their honesty.

Having said that, the idea that ferrets can't survive a right adrenal
surgery is very, very, very outdated. If you are in Valdosta and if
you're willing to take a trip down into Florida I know of an excellent
vet who can examine your ferret and let you know if surgery is
advisable. If you are somewhere else then let us know where and I'm
sure someone can recommend a vet who can give you a second opinion.

The usual disclaimer applies: I am not a vet. I don't even play one
on TV. I'm just another ferret owner who has had ferrets who have had
right adrenal surgery and went on to live a full and happy life.

All the best,
Caity and the dynamic duo
