Subject: [ferrethealth] Insulinoma, diazoxide and hind limb weakness
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hello all,

I have a 6+ year old ferret, Sissy, with pretty acute insulinoma. She is
one of those ferrets with abysmally low blood glucose, often in the 40s,
but is still alert and reasonably active. She is currently maxxed out on
prednisone, 0.1ml of 10mg/ml suspension. She weighed I think 760g at her
last vet visit a month or so ago, a good weight for her. At that level of
pred, she has an occasional low blood sugar episode but we have been able
to avoid full-on seizures at this dose over the last few months.

My question: she is experiencing more hind limb weakness, to the point
where it's inhibiting her ability to get around (we've put down extra
carpeting for her which helps, but our floors are hardwood). Would adding
diazoxide to her medical regimen be likely to help with the hind limb
weakness? I have had good luck with diazoxide in the past delaying the end
stages in ferrets with insulinoma, so I'm willing to try it--but I'm not
sure it would address this symptom. She really is alert and vital apart
from the hind limbs, her appetite and stool are normal. So if this
expensive medication would help her quality of life, I'll spring for it.

Complicating factors for this girl include a long term history of IBD and
also adrenal gland disorder, for which she's been on deslorelin implants
the past 2.5 years. I am of course concerned that the root cause of all
her problems is lymphoma, which is another thing that makes me question
whether diazoxide is likely to help her or not.

Naturally I will also be asking my experienced ferret vet these questions,
but I know that so many of you have experience with insulinoma that it
would be worth asking here as well.

Thanks,
Regina and Sissy
(and indestructible Edgar the sable super model)
