I would be concerned that this is not a "fat" issue, but might be a case of having tumors that are growing and causing the weight gain and lethargy. If he were my ferret I would absolutely get an ultrasound done of his entire abdominal region. If he gets a clean bill of health after an ultrasound, then you can look for other causes or methods of treatment.
