Subject: [ferrethealth] Coat type concern - coarser hair but thinner - shelter ferret
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I have one male Marshalls brand sable 5yr in the rescue that I wonder if
we could ever get a more lush coat on. I wouldn't call it male pattern
baldness as it is not spotty but it is thin. And this time of year I
expect more of a lush coat like the rest of the bunch. I feed a
combination of 81 Ultimate, Totally Ferret, Zupreem Grain Free, Petsmart
All Living Things and DFS when I can get it. The reason for the mix is
so that new adoptors can feed either a mix or one of these types and the
ferret knows it is food. He is also my junk food boy. He will eat any
kind of people food - regardless if acceptable or not. He is more dog
like. Well over the past couple months he has a few battles with
over-itching and getting small skin infections so Gentimicin clears that
right up. He is a very thickly built ferret. Full of muscle with
little fat. He has short legs which appear to be genetic as his
partner, a female, has the same body type/leg length. I have briefly
thougth of Adrenal but it is more like a thin undercoat then balding in
any one spot. He does appear to have more sensitive skin then the
others. I know junky feed like Mazuri gets coats to puff but I won't
feed it after shelling on tons of money in teeth repair over the last
year. So my question is, besides Ferretone (which he does get as a
treat each week), are there other supplements I could try to improve his
coat? Or should I watch for a medical issue with him? He has been
available for adoption so I want to be able to pass on any tips to a new
owner if he finds one. Thanks Kathy in Spokane WA
