Always use the IMPLANT or other long-term release approach like a depot.

Using the deslorelin med that is made for daily use (some of it made for horses) can have the same negative aspects as using the daily Lupron (a related medication) instead of using the depot version of Lupron can have, in other words it can actually worsen the adrenal disease.

You can read the mechanism for why using the wrong med can worsen adrenal disease in here:

http://www.miamiferret.org/24hr_lupron.htm

DO READ IT!

BTW, the daily Lupron for horses is already imported into the U.S. and has been for decades.

The Suprelorin implants might have the med in a gel form inside them; I don't know.

Some U.S. vets are finding it cheaper to import from Virbac Europe instead of Peptech in Australia; all appearances are that there will be a time this year (hopefully soon) when Virbac U.S.A. begins selling the Suprelorin (deslorelin) implants right here in the U.S., and vets CAN use their "contact us" form to ask to be put on the list to be notified when that is possible. Just remember to not put any spacing between the digits in the hospital phone number.

So, you must make sure that your vet is not speaking of the daily form of deslorelin.

BOTH forms of deslorelin are approved for use in the U.S. and as you can see hopefully pretty soon the implant will be available, but it sounds like he might be using the daily form. Using the daily form is a mistake made in the past with Lupron and it DID speed up adrenal disease in some of those ferrets. Cheaper is sometimes far, far worse, and with the Lupron daily form that was the case for too many!

Addendum: Just because a vet gives a med less often than daily does not mean that it is not the daily form!
