Again, the class of drugs that Lupron and deslorelin belong to NEED to be given as slowly releasing forms, the implant for the deslorelin, or the depot for the Lupron, because the others are daily forms and using them can actually worsen adrenal disease. It won't do that in all, but it's pretty much a crap shoot, so a foolish risk.

Read:

Back when too many people were experimenting with the 24 version of Lupron Mike Janke and I had some terribly heartbreaking mails from people whose ferrets had had their adrenal disease accelerated from using the 24 hour version. The cases progressed very rapidly in exactly the wrong direction. It was frightening and incredibly sad, so Mike contacted an expert to get that wrote-up on WHY that happened. To learn why it is so read that article.

Here is a quote of part of what that expert explained to Mike (and I figure it's okay for me to use it here since I am one of the people Mike put in charge of his site information when he knew he was terminally ill, and I am using it because frankly this approach really scares me and because of the horror stories Mike and I heard before which upset him at least as badly as they upset me, very possibly more since they propelled him into doing so much work to get straight facts out there.):
> "... if the Lupron is of the type that all enters the bloodstream in 24 hrs., (24 hr. Lupron) what you get is a few hours of high pituitary activity followed by only several HOURS of inactivity (desensitized). Then the 24 hr. Lupron is gone shortly thereafter, and the pituitary RE-sensitizes and LH release to the natural GnRH resumes probably in a day or so. If the ferret is only getting the 24hr. shot once a month, it's useless. In fact, the use of the 24 hr. Lupron probably makes the adrenal disease worse because you don't get much therapeutic effect, but you are still getting that initial high pituitary activity when the Lupron is first administered. This initial burst of pituitary activity is of little consequence when it is followed by cessation of pituitary activity. But, with the 24 hr. Lupron, you get only the initial burst of pituitary high activity -- followed by normal pituitary activity. It's like adding a splash of gasoline to a fire."

Lupron and deslorelin are in the SAME CLASS of medications; they are closely related meds that work in the same way, and although each of the meds in that class varies some, this same risk should exist with each of those medications, so using the short term version, which is what this equine medication is, is asking for a strong risk of far worse trouble.
