To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I personally would not be ‘experimenting’ with unproven methods of treating insulinoma if my ferret was ‘hanging onto life by a thread’, as you state.

Alternatives to prednisolone would be dexamethasone (brand name Azium) or diazoxide. If prednisolone is always given WITH food, and some pepcid is used as needed, and possibly some carafate, then it will usually not cause ulcers. I have had to resort to large doses of pred with some ferrets with late-stage insulinoma or lymphoma, and have never had it cause ulcers.

What is more likely the cause of the ulcers is the stress being put in the ferret’s body when it’s blood glucose level goes too low from lack of sufficient food and/or proper medicines. An insulinomic ferret must eat small, high-protein meals frequently (every 4-5 hours), and the pred should be given 3 times daily, every 8 hours. Lack of a regimen similar to this could very well leave the ferret with severe dips in his blood glucose levels, which in turn puts excessive stress on the body, with the result often being ulcers.
